About the Course
This course provides a basic overview of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) Parts 1, 2 and 3, and application to common local traffic signing situations to promote safety and mobility, including:
* Proper sign selection and installation
* Roadway signing materials and hardware, including the latest in roadway safety materials, breakaway sign posts, and tamper and vandal resistant hardware
* Retro-reflectivity properties and day and night time inspection methods
* Repair techniques for signs and break- away sign supports
* Sign inventories and the latest in inventory management systems
* Basic striping applications and methods
The information for this presentation was compiled from FHWA and Louisiana DOTD standards and specification guidelines for proper sign material selection, installation, inspection, and maintenance. Examples of improper signing and legal liability issues will also be discussed.

Engineers, technicians, road supervisors, local agency sign shop personnel, and others involved in selection, placement, evaluation, and maintenance of signs and pavement markings will benefit from this course.
Instructor
Steven C. Strength, P.E., P.T.O.E.
Steven serves as Program Manager for the Local Technical Assistance Program at LSU, overseeing training, technical assistance, and outreach activities that benefit the local public agencies in Louisiana. Prior to joining LTAP in 2013, he spent 31 years with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, District 02 in New Orleans, including 22 years as District Traffic Operations Engineer. During this time he managed or participated in a variety of programs and projects involving Traffic Engineering, Highway Safety, Roadway Maintenance, Work Zone Operations, Incident and Special Events Management, and Intelligent Transportation Systems.
He is a past President of the Deep South Section and Southern District of ITE, and past Chairman of the South Louisiana Chapter of the National Safety Council.
Registration is required one week in advance of class. You can register online at www.louisianaltap.org. Registrants will receive a confirmation of their reservation. Registration by mail is available if postmarked before the deadline. Registration is $25.00 for municipal or public sector personnel and $50.00 for all others, which covers all materials, breakfast and lunch. If we do not have 72 hours advanced notice that you will not attend the seminar, your registration fee will be forfeited.
