About the Course
This course is intended for engineers, technicians, inspectors, and maintenance personnel whose duties require an intermediate understanding of traffic control in work zones, including design, setup, and management of traffic controls. Based on the 2009 Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, (MUTCD), key topic areas include:

  • Fundamental Principles of Traffic Control
  • Elements of Temporary Traffic Control Zones
  • Worker and Road User Safety Considerations
  • Temporary Traffic Control Devices
  • Temporary Traffic Control Activities
  • Typical Applications for Local Agency Work
  • Traffic Control for Incident Management
One year of field experience is recommended, but not required for this course; however, completion of the LTAP Mini-Workshop “Basics of Work Zone Traffic Control with Flagger” is recommended to understand the concepts presented in this course.


Instructor
Steven C. Strength

Steven serves as Program Manager for the Local Technical Assistance Program at LSU, overseeing training, technical assistance, and outreach activities that benefit the local public agencies in Louisiana. Prior to joining LTAP in 2013, he spent 31 years with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, District 02 in New Orleans, including 22 years as District Traffic Operations Engineer. During this time he managed or participated in a variety of programs and projects involving Traffic Engineering, Highway Safety, Roadway Maintenance, Work Zone Operations, Incident and Special Events Management, and Intelligent Transportation Systems.


Enrollment, Registration, and Cancellation Policy
Registration is required one week in advance. Registration is $25.00 for municipal or public sector personnel and $50.00 for all others. This fee covers all materials, breakfast, and lunch. Registrants will receive a confirmation of their reservation. If an agency is unable to mail in the registration fee before the deadline, please phone, FAX, or e-mail the LTAP office with the names of the work- shop participants (800-595-4722 in-state or 225-767-9117; FAX 225-767-9156); bbreaux@ltrc.lsu.edu.
