Course Description: This course is intended for all engineers, technicians, inspectors, and maintenance personnel who work on public rights of way with exposure to traffic. The course provides an elementary understanding of traffic control in work zones, including planning, setup, and maintenance of traffic controls, with an emphasis on worker and road user safety. Based on the 2009 Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, (MUTCD), key topic areas include:
Introduction to Work Zones
Planning Traffic Controls
Using Traffic Control Devices
Setting up Traffic Control in Work Zones
Flagging Fundamentals
Liability considerations in Work Zones
The course includes a field exercise where participants will have the opportunity to learn and demonstrate basic flagging procedures. Participants should bring their safety vests to class for use in the field exercise.
This course does not qualify as a required certification for contractors under DOTD rules.
