Thanks to a work zone safety grant from FHWA, the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) will be offering their Traffic Control Technician and Traffic Control Supervisor courses to local public agency (LPA) personnel, and others, in February of 2014. Completion of these courses is a requirement for contractors and inspectors on most construction projects in Louisiana involving State or Federal funds. These courses also provide valuable information for engineering, public works, and supervisory employees in the public sector. The cost of each course is only $25 for public agency employees, the remainder being subsidized by the FHWA grant. These courses are the first offered to LPA employees that feature new "Louisiana Specific" standards now used in all Federal and State funded projects in Louisiana and are included on DOTD's Traffic Control Detail Standard Plans.

The Traffic Control Technician (TCT) course to be held February 11, 2014, at TTEC, is a one-day introductory training course that focuses on the principles surrounding temporary work zone traffic control (click here to register). TCT teaches the concepts, techniques, and practices in the installation as well as maintenance of traffic control devices and is intended for those involved in these activities. Students will walk away with practical knowledge to make their projects safer for workers, motorists and pedestrians. The class will also help students reduce the exposure of the worker and the agency to possible litigation. All students receive an ATSSA Guide as the text material for the course which features material from the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Previous traffic control experience is not required to take this class.

The Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS) Course is a two-day course that will follow on February 12-13 at TTEC, and which includes four workshops and one homework problem. Topics include Traffic Control Standards, Traffic Control Devices, Designing for the Driver, Building the Temporary Traffic Control System, Plan Reading Concepts, The Typical Project, and Legal Aspects. In addition to the practical exercises, the second day includes discussions of Night Work, Flagging Operations, Supervisory Skills, and a final examination. Additional instructional and reference material is provided in the TCS course that participants will find valuable to their work in the field. While previous experience is not required, students with at least one year of field experience in work zone traffic control will benefit the most from this instruction.

Completion of either the TCT or the TCS classes is a first step to receiving optional ATSSA certifications. Additional steps include field experience in traffic control, payment of a certification fee, and recommendation by two references who can verify work experience
