LTRC's Engineering and External Educational Resource Development program manages the budget and administers all training contracts to provide education and training resources to DOTD employees statewide.

The mission of this unit is to help divisions and sections define and prioritize department training needs, to develop specialized curricula, and to deliver continuing education, professional development, and technical skills workshops, seminars and training programs that serve DOTD statewide training needs.

In addition, the program provides self-study courses and certification materials and registers employees for training courses off-site for job specific technical and professional development topics.

Course Descriptions

MicroStation V8i SS2 Level I – ETRN# U8031A - A four day course for the student who has knowledge of the Microsoft Windows operating system and needs to learn the basic concepts of MicroStation V8i. This course is designed to teach the essential basic concepts of the MicroStation program interface, 2D File creation, employing the use of basic drafting and design file editing and manipulation tools. It also includes the fundamental concepts of drawing settings and configurations; the basic program drawing interface, Task based interface, Levels, Precision drawing, AccuDraw, Fences and Measuring. Prerequisite: Introduction to Windows or equivalent experience

MicroStation V8i SS2 Level II – ETRN# U8032A - A four day course designed for the student who wishes to become a more proficient user of the MicroStation commands and utilities. The course builds on the concepts and skills covered in MicroStation Levels I. It includes Creating Complex elements, Grouping elements, Creating Models and Cells, Patterning and Hatching, References, Composing Sheets, Text and Dimensioning. Prerequisite: MicroStation Level I

MicroStation V8i SS2 Upgrade – ETRN# U8037A - A two day course that focuses on an introduction to the changes in the MicroStation V8i SS1 software. It covers topics related to transitioning to the new software using the new features to enhance productivity including: Enhancements to Text, Project Explorer, Geo-Coordination tools, and general Interface changes. It is taught from the user's perspective and does not go in depth into configuration and administration of the software. Prerequisite: MicroStation Level I & MicroStation Level II

MicroStation 3-D V8i SS2 Basics – ETRN# U8023B - A three day course designed for the experienced student who has completed Levels I and II and wishes to explore the basic 3-D capabilities of the MicroStation V8i program. This course examines the MicroStation's 3-D capability and covers some of the most popular concepts and tools used for navigating and working in a MicroStation's 3-D design file. The course includes: 3D file basics including view controls, Drawing in 3D, Measuring in a 3D file, using AccuDraw in 3D, 3D Primitives, 3D Extrusions, Rendering: Views, Materials, Lighting, Backgrounds and Output. The class project includes drawing and rendering a bridge. Prerequisite: MicroStation Level II & MicroStation Upgrade

Applying DOTD CADD Standards V8i SS2 – ETRN# U9039A - A one day course that provides instruction in the use of DOTD CADD Standards and functionality of standards management software. The course includes instruction in the operation of Altiva, CADconform for MicroStation, and MicroStation workspaces in the LA DOTD environment. Prerequisite: MicroStation Level I & MicroStation Upgrade

Applying InRoads V8i SS2 – ETRN# U9010B - A four day course for civil engineers and designers who will use InRoads for design and evaluation of highway or other corridor projects. Students complete an example road design project that illustrates both workflow and concepts of using the software tools for corridor development. Prerequisite: MicroStation Level II, MicroStation Upgrade & MicroStation 3D

Advanced InRoadsV8i SS2– ETRN# U9011B - A four day course for civil engineers and designers with previous InRoads experience who want to progress into more advanced techniques. It focuses on utilizing some of the more complex road and site design functions contained in these applications. Students will complete example design problems in the areas of: Alignments and Coordinate Geometry, DTM's, Advanced Cross Sections and Profiles, Templating and Advanced components, End conditions, Point Controls, Multiple Corridors, etc. Prerequisite: Applying InRoads

InRoads Upgrade V8i SS2 – ETRN# U9014A - A two day course designed for experienced users of previous versions of InRoads and focuses on the changes in the V8i version of the software. It covers topics related to transitioning to the new software and using the new features to enhance productivity. This includes Interface Enhancements, Automatic Design Criteria and Annotation, Template and Designer Enhancements, Bentley Map, Civil AccuDraw and Civil Geometry. It is taught from the user's perspective and does not go in depth into configuration and administration of the software. Prerequisite: Previous version of Applying InRoads

Applying InRoads Survey V8i SS2 – ETRN# U9025A - A two day course designed for surveyors and other in house personnel who reduce survey data. It covers the process of taking raw data and generating digital terrain models, alignment and coordinate geometry data, and MicroStation graphics files that can be passed on to design. Also covered are the tools necessary to create ROW takes and deed descriptions. Prerequisite: Ability to use MicroStation with at least 80 hours of hands-on experience; Familiarity with MicroStation 3D Basics; Familiarity with survey terms and concepts.

Applying InRoads Storm & Sanitary V8i SS2 – ETRN# U9022A - A three day course designed for civil engineers and designers who will use Storm and Sanitary software for sanitary sewer design and/or storm drainage design. The course format is lecture and lab activities using sample projects to explain software commands and design application. Prerequisite: Applying InRoads

Descartes V8i SS2 – ETRN# U9034A - A one day course designed to serve the mapping and visualization needs of professionals. Descartes is the only imaging solution that is truly integrated with MicroStation for high productivity visualization, mapping, and raster-to-vector conversion in a single product. It has tools to warp, reproject, resample, edit and mosaic aerial photos and satellite images, and optical character recognition (OCR) capabilities allow you to convert maps or scanned items. Prerequisite: MicroStation Level II

ProjectWise for DOTD Workflow V8i SS2 – ETRN# U9041A - A two day course combing the ProjectWise Fundamentals class for day one and the DOTD workflow day for day two using ControlCAD tools, providing specific instructions on the use of ProjectWise within the DOTD environment. The course focuses on instructor lead exercises for additional topics such as the standard DOTD Project Folder structure, DOTD Plan Delivery and Publishing, DOTD CAD workspace environment, and DOTD Document Attributes.

Modeling in 3D V8i SS1 – ETRN# U9045A - A four day course for civil engineers and designers with previous MicroStation and InRoads experience who want to create highway models that combine multiple InRoads corridors to create a final DTM. It focuses on utilizing some of the more complex road design functions in InRoads to create the 3D terrain model including intersections, ramps, walls, grading around bridges, etc. and continues with MicroStation modeling techniques to create a 3D model of a basic bridge. Also covered are basic rendering techniques. The lab work consists of creating a model for an interchange and bridge, then applying materials and rendering the model. Prerequisite: MicroStation Level I & II, Applying InRoads

University of Louisiana at Lafayette

The UL at Lafayette Department of Civil Engineering offers the following:

Almost all Civil & Environmental Engineering courses are relevant to the “Transportation Discipline.” Also, UNO offers a graduate program M.S. in Transportation in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning.

Other information provided by UNO was about the Civil Engineering program in general, and not specific to transportation. A brochure on the program included several specialties, none specific to transportation. The course catalog is extensive, and most can be related to transportation.
